Situated on the east coast of Ireland approximately 12 miles from Dublin, Portmarnock golf club was founded in 1894 and designed by W.C. Pickeman. This links style golf course has the Irish Sea running down three of its sides so as you can well imagine the prevailing wind is a major factor when playing this golf course.
The original nine-hole course was extended to 18 holes course in 1896, but it wasn't until 1971 that Portmarnock became a 27 hole complex. The three groups of nine are now referred to as the Red Course, Blue Course and Yellow Course. The Red and Blue sections of the course form the championship course.
Portmarnock golf course has been the venue for many prestigious competitions - British Amateur Championship in 1949, the 1960 Canada Cup, the 1991 Walker Cup and has staged the Irish open twelve times.
